As for hardware, Nintendo Switch was the best selling console in terms of unit and dollar sales. On the other hand, it wasn’t good news for Switch, PS4, and Xbox One because they all experienced year-over-year sales declines in January, which led to a 35 percent decrease in sales year-over-year to $129 million. It is that surprising as January has always been a difficult month for console sales because it follows the very busy holiday shopping season. In the accessories section, the Xbox Elite Series 2 controller was still at the top-seller in January and it has held this position since its launch in November. Furthermore, it is the fifth fastest-selling accessory in US history, according to NPD. Both the accessories and game card spending for January reached $238 million might sound good but actually is down 11 percent. When combining all three things (games, hardware, and accessories) makes a total of $678 million, which is down 26 percent. The NPD said this downturn was mainly because of the “lighter” slate of new releases and “late-cycle hardware dynamics” for the PS4 and Xbox One.
